In the late-1970s, a Sandwich-area group of friends known as The Over The Hill Hikers began gathering each week to tackle some modest area hikes, most of which ended with a picnic or a nice view from the summit. As these things always do, they moved on to more difficult climbs and their ranks grew. Trips to 4,000 footers and beyond ensued!
In 1990, the group began creating another list, The 52 With a View: shorter but in some cases quite difficult climbs, all with fine and open views at the summit or on the ledges. Hiking in New Hampshire today is often about lists, the 48 4,ooo-footers being the most popular. But in recent years, the 52 With a View has gained popularity with not just older hikers, but beginners and families as well.
For myself and Janelle, the list has provided us with attainable, and beautiful hiking goals. The list is a way for hikers like myself, looking for new challenges, to discover different adventures. And it’s a way for new enthusiasts like Janelle to become strong, practice her passion and hone her ability for larger peaks. For us, the 52 With a View has become a way for us to bond, to learn about each other and become stronger friends.
